Variegated Anthurium Breeding: Why the Mother Plant Matters
In the cultivation of Anthurium, especially variegated types, breeders usually use the variegated plant as the mother plant. This practice is based on the principles of cytoplasmic inheritance, which is how most variegation traits are currently passed down in the market.
Variegation, in most cases, is not controlled by nuclear DNA (the genetic material inherited from both pollen and ovule), but by the cytoplasm — the material surrounding the nucleus within a cell. Because the cytoplasmic content of a plant cell is inherited only from the mother plant, variegation is typically passed down through the female line.
During pollination, the pollen (male gamete) delivers only nuclear DNA into the egg cell and does not contribute cytoplasm. As a result, variegation — being a cytoplasmic trait in most cases — generally cannot be inherited from the father plant.
Therefore, using a variegated plant as the pollen donor is usually ineffective for passing down variegation. This is one of the reasons why variegated Anthuriums remain relatively rare in the market. Only when there are enough variegated mother plants available can breeders consistently produce more variegated offspring through hybridisation.
Other traits, such as leaf shape, red venation, velvety texture, or dark green to near-black colouration, are controlled by nuclear genes. These characteristics are inherited from both parents and can be passed on through standard crossbreeding, regardless of which plant serves as the pollen donor or seed parent.
That said, there are rare cases where variegation is controlled by nuclear DNA. In such situations, the father plant may also contribute to variegation; however, this is uncommon.
I have tested several hybrid combinations, including:
- Mag var × Lux
- Mag var × RVDP
- AOS var × Mag var
So far, my results have supported the theory described above. And I would like to recommend that you use Variegated Anthurium as a seed parent to maximise the seed variegation percentage.
